Taught in the purest senia tradition by his teacher Pt. Shyamal Chattopadhyay, Suman has become one of the most accomplished practitioners of stringed Indian Classical music. Suman’s instrument of choice is a variation of the more traditional veena, a design that Suman himself crafted. True to his musical upbringing, his style of music stays true to traditional Dhrupad, maintaining strict grammar and rules. He is especially skilled at maintaining his grammatical excellence even when performing uncommon ragas and talas.

Suman has performed in many prestigious musical conferences and concerts in India. He has also extensively toured Europe, performing in concerts, workshops and music festivals.

A few of his favorites were the Lute Festival in Dresden, the Deutsche Indische Gesellschaft in Germany, and the Tagore Center in Berlin.

Suman has had the privilege of performing with legendary masters and gurus of percussion like Pandit Anindo Chatterji, Pt. Kumar Bose, Pt Arup Chattopadhyay, Pt. Abhijit Banerjee, Abhiman Kaushal, Parimal Chakraborty and many more.

As a music teacher Suman continues the old Indian tradition of ‘Guru Shishya Parampara’, an age-old practice and one of the oldest methods of teaching Indian music. His students are spread out in Los Angeles, Arizona, Nevada and in the surrounding states. He is the music director of Cerritos Music Circle, also giving Indian Classical Music lessons and performing.

Though trained in Benaras style, Monir expanded to other styles and also received brief but extensive tutelage from tabla stalwarts such as Pandit Nayan Ghosh, Pandit Anup Ghosh, Pandit Anindo Chatterjee as well as (late) Ustad Shawkat Ali Khan.

Monir played tabla and appeared in person in Hollywood film American Chai and has been performing since his teen years. Some of the notable musicians includes well-known musicians such as Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia, Ustad Vilayat Khan, Ustad Shahid Parvez, Smt. Anupama Bhagwat, Guitarist Pt. Debashish Bhattacharya the late Smt. Laxmi Shankar and many others. The name ‘Jugalbandi’ is derived from Hindi, which means a union. The three artists demonstrate chemistry on stage with their understanding of each other’s musical expressions. Performing in
traditional Hindustani (North Indian) classical style, they will be presenting different compositions in different Ragas set to different beat cycles (Taal) and tempo. Accompanied by the Tabla, the two stringed instruments interact with each other, often resorting to call and responses, to create a dialogue or conversation. This type of interaction is typically the hallmark of a Jugalbandi concert and provides an engrossing and engaging experience for the audience.

SNEHESH NAG
Snehesh started learning North Indian classical music and the sitar at the age of four from his father, sitar virtuoso Pt. Sugato Nag, belonging to the sarod gharana of Senia Shahjahanpore. He also took lessons from Shri Pranab Naha during his early childhood. He was attached to the ITC Sangeet Research Academy (SRA) as a junior scholar from 2010 to 2015 under Guru Padma Bhushan Pandit Buddhadev Das Gupta; advanced lessons from Pt. Das Gupta continued until his passing. In addition to the style of the Senia Shahjahanpore gharana, he infuses the Imdadakhani gharana style, taught by his father, into his playing. Furthermore, he frequently takes talim from the sarod maestro, Pt. Prattyush Banerjee. He has also learned the tabla from tabla maestro Pt. Tanmoy Bose and has taken vocal instruction from Shri Sandeep Nag.

Snehesh has received international acclaim, having performed to learned audiences across multiple cities across India, the US, and Canada. He has been featured in various newspaper reviews; his playing has been addressed as one that blends a lot of “emotion, surprise elements, and aesthetic touches...all streaming out of a thinking mind, far too matured for his age.” (The Hindu, 2015). He stood second in the All India Radio (AIR) music competition, 2014, and was awarded the Acharya Allauddin Khan Memorial Award 2014 at the National Centre for the Performing Arts, Mumbai, in January 2015. He has become a regular performer for All India Radio. He currently is a recipient of the national scholarship recognized by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.

He graduated with a MS in Music Technology from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2020, and often engages in exploring sounds, both from his sitar and other sources, with the use of technology. He often collaborates with a variety of musicians, and enjoys discovering and improvising based on the common musical langauge shared between them.

MONIR HOSSAIN
Monir Hossain hails from a musical family, grandson of researcher and performer of well-known Ustad Kader Buksh of Murshidabad, West Bengal, India. Born in Bangladesh, and migrated to US with his family at a very early age, Monir was musically influenced at an early age by his father, vocalist Ustad Hafiz Hossain, a regular classical vocalist at All India Radio in Calcutta. His long term guru is Pandit Samar Saha of Sangeet Research Academy, Calcutta.

Though trained in Benaras style, Monir expanded to other styles and also received brief but extensive talim from tabla stalwarts such as Pandit Nayan Ghosh, Pandit Anup Ghosh, Pandit Anindo Chatterjee as well as (late) Ustad Shawkat Ali Khan. He has released CDs with sarod maestro late Pt. Budhadev Das Gupta, Pt. Debojyoti Bose and sitar maestro Ustad Shahid Parvez. Monir continues to explore creative ways to infuse his traditional training with his evolving style of accompaniment as he continues to mature musically. Monir lives in Northern Virginia area and currently teaches and performs all over the continental USA and Canada, India and Bangladesh.
